Some varieties of Philippine coffee
Let's start learning about the Philippine coffee varieties from the Cordillera mountains, Sulu, and the Bukidnon region.
Sagada Arabica Coffee
This grade comes from the region of Sagada, in the highlands of the Cordillera, in the north of the Philippines. Sagada Arabica is not mass-produced, unlike other popular coffees in the Philippines.
The light and juicy Sagada Arabica has a slight acidity. Most people favor medium to dark roast. This coffee is a good start to the day. After meals, it is common to enjoy the sweet flavors of cocoa and caramel.
Kapeng Barako
Kapeng Baraco, also known as Batangas Coffee, is one of the most famous coffees in the Philippines. To be specific, this is a variation of Liberica, which is commonly known in the Philippines.
The typical taste of Kapeng Barako is a bright, almost spicy one. You may experience a lot of strong taste notes, including anise and dark chocolate. Batangas coffee is a delightful after-dinner treat, but for local coffee lovers, it's a staple of almost every meal.
Coffee Benguet Arabica
Benguet is a coffee variety that is perhaps the most popular in the Philippines. The province produces Arabica coffee of the Typica variety. In Atoca, La Trinidad, Touba, and other parts of the province, coffee trees are grown.
Kahawa Sug
This is a unique variety that is also known as Sulu Robusta. It has become a popular product among locals and has recently established itself in the international coffee industry.
Kahawa Sug, like other popular coffee beans in the Philippines, is grown in small batches. Compared to other Robustas, it has a bright taste with a sweet aftertaste, but it doesn't have much sourness or bitterness.
Bukidnon Tribal Arabica
In Bukidnon province, there is a wide selection of Arabica and Robusta coffee. There are several varieties available in this province, such as the typical, catimor, and Robusta. Mount Kitanglad is one of the most popular places to find unique coffee. There is a clear, fruity taste to the coffee that's been grown from the slopes of this mountain and it's famous among coffee drinkers.
Coffee Bukidnon Tribal Robusta
The tribes of the Maramag region in Bukidnon cultivate this kind of coffee. These Robusta beans are grown below the altitude of Bukidnon Arabica, which confers a deeper and weaker acidic taste in coffee. It's a popular choice among coffee drinkers in the morning for its pleasant floral aroma and dark chocolate flavor.
"Another favorite way to obtain Philippine coffee is by mixing it with jelly. Mix coffee with milk, cream, sugar, and gelatin to make an elegant dessert that can be enjoyed cold. Boil, then refrigerate until set and ready to drink."
